NEW ORLEANS AFFILIATE OF SUSAN G. KOMEN FOR THE CURE®

AWARDS $475,000 IN COMMUNITY GRANTS FOR CRITICAL BREAST CANCER SCREENING, EDUCATIONAL, OUTREACH AND TREATMENT PROGRAMS

$475,000 for New Orleans Area to Help Uninsured/Underserved Women and Families

New Orleans, LA. – April 12, 2013 – A total of $475,000 in local grants to fund breast cancer screening, outreach, education and treatment programs was announced today from the New Orleans Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® at the site of a Komen Grantee the St. Thomas Community Health Center, 1936 magazine Street, New Orleans.

“To meet needs right here in our community, this year’s grants specifically address the funding of breast cancer screening, treatment and educational programs in our 8 parish service area. This comes at a critical time as the funding for the LA Breast and Cervical Health Program is not currently covered in the state budget” said Frank Liantonio, President of the Board of Directors, Komen New Orleans.

Since 1992, Komen New Orleans has funded over $3.8 million dollars to LOCAL breast cancer community grants. Through events like the Komen New Orleans Race for the Cure, this year in CITY PARK, Saturday, October 26th, the Komen New Orleans Affiliate invests 75% of net proceeds LOCALLY in our 8 parish region within the greater New Orleans area. The remaining 25 percent is used to fund national breast cancer research to find the cures.

In order to ensure it is funding programs that address the specific unmet breast cancer needs of the greater New Orleans community, the Komen New Orleans Affiliate works with local health care professionals and community leaders to conduct a comprehensive community needs assessment. This community profile, a standard practice of all Komen Affiliates, is then used to establish a local grant application and review process consistent with the organization’s standards and mission.
